Forest Schools are a unique and fun approach to working with children and young people: the use of the outdoors, specifically woodlands provide a broad range of learning opportunities and the encouragement of learning through play.

This ‘outdoor’ approach to play and learning can have a huge impact on the normal development of all children.

Forest Schools Philosophy
"The philosophy of Forest Schools is to encourage and inspire individuals, of any age, to enjoy the opportunities offered by natural play, through positive outdoor experiences.
By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment each participant has an opportunity to develop motivation, balanced emotional and social skills. These, through self awareness, can be developed to help reach personal potential.
Forest Schools has demonstrated success with children of all ages who visit local woodlands on a regular basis, with trained practitioners and through play and self directed learning, have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly how to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.
Forest Schools run throughout the year, going to the woods in all weathers (except for high winds). Children use full sized tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, establish and grow in confidence, self-esteem and become more self motivated."

Who is Forest School for?

Children aged 3+ will experience Squirrel Lodge Forest School when our Forest School leader feels they are ready. Our Forest School sessions run on several days and children will be taken out in small groups to the woodland next to the nursery garden.

What will they actually do?
There are so many learning opportunities to experience outdoors but to name a few, they will make dens, explore tracks, lay trails, use simple hand tools to make wooden objects, build dens, cook on fires, create art, switch on their senses, play, climb, develop an understanding of the properties of earth, wood, water and stone, find wildlife, understand eco-systems, create and follow maps, learn bushcraft skills, stories and songs…..
…in all weathers and in all seasons.

"There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing"

The Meads Community Woodland

As well as the woodland on our doorstep we are also a few minutes walk away from the Meads Woodland which is a remarkable place, rich in history as well as wildlife.
