The Atelier

The Reggio Emilia approach calls for the integration of the arts as tools for cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development. In the preschools of Reggio Emilia, each school has a space called the atelier and the figure of the atelierista an educator with a interest in arts. The Atelier is the place of research, invention, and empathy, expressed by means of  the “100 languages  of children”. Presentation of ideas in multiple forms of representation -- print, paint, drawing, sculpture, construction, drama, music, digital media, photography, puppetry, shadow play etc. -- are viewed as essential to children's understanding of experience.

In our indoor and outdoor ateliers, children will explore and create using a variety of media. Practitioners will teach children how to use and to look after the art materials and  help develop their expressive arts and design skills. From time to time if interests develop,  the children will work on art projects which will last as long as the children are interested. Practitioners will introduce the children to different Artists work and encourage them to try out different techniques.

Children can initiate activities in our Ateliers, they can explore independently as resources are accessible to them. As well as this, Practitioners will plan adult led activities and set up provocations to help inspire the children in a variety of ways.
